After researching and analysing the different magazine pages, I have gained an understanding on several different elements:
- A house style is established by the use of colour and typography, and it is usually carried on throughout the magazine
- Contrasting colours are usually used together to make the text stand out
- Direct address is used frequently by the featured artist to involve the audience more - it makes them feel like they have a more personal connection with the celebrity
- The layout is very structured - there is rarely any overlapping of text boxes
- The main colours used for text is either black or white because they stand out the most effectively
- Production values - if the magazine is published frequently e.g. weekly, it is most likely to have low production values and low quality images. A high production value magazine such as Q magazine is published every month and uses professional photographs taken in a studio with good lighting
- If a female character is used she is often sexualised to attract the male audience - this supports Laura Mulvey's theory of 'The Male Gaze'. Provocative clothing is also used hold the male audiences interest, and the direct address will make it seem like the magazine is targeting them personally
Excellent analysis Zoe - detailed and thorough. Although i'd like to see a bit more terminology and theory included.
